Norman (Norm) Schaule

Norman (Norm) Schaule of Canyon Lake passed away on July 6th after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Diane Schaule, and her son, Robert Glenn Chapman; his son, William, and wife Denise, along with grandsons Jordan, Ryan, and Trey of Burleson, TX. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert Schaule and wife Charlet of Mertzon, Texas, and Charles Schaule of Alabama. He was predeceased by his brother, Jesse Schaule of Colorado. Norm was the beloved son of the late William Schaule and Betty Sweeten Schaule.

Growing up in an Air Force family, Norm spent many years overseas due to his father’s assignments in the Security Service, receiving his education in both Department of Defense and local schools. He often spoke fondly of his time in Edinburgh, Scotland. During his junior year of high school, his father was transferred overseas again, leaving Norm in the care of his grandmother in San Angelo, Texas, where he graduated from Central High School in 1966. It was at a high school game that Coach George from Angelo State University noticed Norm and invited him to play for the Angelo State Rams.

Norm pursued his undergraduate studies at Angelo State University, working part-time and playing basketball for the Rams. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Teaching, graduating in 1973. Upon graduation, Norm was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and entered pilot training. He became a certified C-141 pilot, initially flying airlift missions out of Vietnam. His distinguished 31-year career included assignments at Warner Robins, GA, as a Group Recruiting Commander; McGuire AFB as Squadron Commander of the 18th MAS; Charleston Air Force Base; Altus AFB, OK; Scott AFB, IL; Randolph AFB, San Antonio; McGuire AFB, NJ; and The Pentagon.

While working at the Pentagon in 1992, Norm met Diane Chapman, an Army Civil Service employee in HQDA Personnel, living in Alexandria, VA. He often joked about “stalking” her for a year before finding the courage to speak to her—a true story. They married on June 4th, 1994, after his graduation from Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama. They lived apart for four years before Norm returned to the Pentagon. His final tour of duty was with the Secretary of the Air Force in Senior O􏰀icial Investigations. Both Diane and Norm retired in 2004 and moved to Canyon Lake, TX.

Norm was an active member of the Canyon Lake Noon Lions Club for many years, holding various positions and participating in numerous service activities. His dedication and service will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
